As a charity we endeavour to play an essential role in supporting Brisbane’s most vulnerable residents, with cost-of-living pressures, housing crisis, and the devastating effects of domestic violence affecting countless individuals, the demand for support continues to grow.
Recognising the importance of charities like Open Hands efforts is the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Trust with whom recently awarded 22 grants to local charities. These grants have empowered organisations like Open Hands to continue our vital work, providing resources and assistance to those in need across our city.
In addition to the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Trust grants, the 2024 Australia Post Community Grants have awarded 71 projects with funding of up to $10,000 each. These projects focus on fostering community connection and improving mental health and well-being across Australia.
One of the local initiatives benefiting from this support is “Hug-A-Mug,” hosted by Open Hands Community Centre (OHCC) at Pallara. Thanks to recent grants from both the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Trust and Australia Post, OHCC has been bringing people together every Friday from 10 AM to 12 PM for meaningful connections and conversations.
About “Hug-A-Mug”
“Hug-A-Mug” is a welcoming space designed to combat social isolation and promote mental well-being within the local community. Hosted outdoors at OHCC, these weekly sessions offer:
- A safe and inclusive environment for social interaction.
- A non-judgmental space where individuals and families can connect.
- Opportunities to meet new people and build friendships over a warm cup of tea or coffee.
The program features delicious morning tea prepared by dedicated volunteers and aims to bring people together in a simple yet powerful way—sharing a cuppa and a chat.
